East coast of Tanegashima, point under the lighthouse, best sunrise! Overview

Point under the lighthouse is a great place for sunrise (from photographer's point of view)

The point in front of the hotel in Minami-Tane Town faces east, but it is difficult to photograph the sunrise because it is hidden by the water fountain of the statue. (It may be possible to photograph the sunrise from the hotel.)

However, the nearby point under the lighthouse is also a good place for sunrise.

Also, in the early morning, local surfers come to watch the ocean, such as "wave check" by seed wave members, so it is a good place to exchange information.

Sunrise and Serval Rock at Lighthouse Point

Sunrise on Tanegashima is later than on the mainland, so there is no need to get up absurdly early.

You can see beautiful sunrises anywhere along the coast, but this point under the lighthouse offers a more beautiful sunrise because it can be photographed from the cliff top.

Location of the point under the lighthouse in Minami-Tane Town

The surf point under the lighthouse, about 5 minutes by car from the point in front of the hotel, is actually a famous place for sunrise as well.

Sunset is on the west coast and sunrise is on the east coast.

The point under the lighthouse is just below the lighthouse

The surf point under the lighthouse on Tanegashima Island is, as the name suggests, located under the cliff of the Takezaki Lighthouse on the east coast of Minami-Tanegi-cho.

It is also a point with a spectacular view of the vast expanse of coastline.

The lighthouse is in the upper left corner of the picture, but it is not shown in this picture.

The rocket launch site of the Tanegashima Space Center can be seen at the end of the beach.

Near the rocket launch site (Osaki Beach), there is a place where octopus jar fishing, locally called "tako" (octopus), is conducted, and it is actually a surfing point.

However, since you have to travel several kilometers along this coast, the "octopus point" is seldom crowded, and even I, a local, have never taken a surfing picture because it is too far away.

The point under the lighthouse is on the grounds of the Tanegashima Space Center

This site is on the grounds of the Tanegashima Space Center, so it is off-limits on the day of the rocket launch, but anyone can visit freely on normal days.

There is a parking lot on a small hill, but the number of cars is limited, and since the road ahead is closed to traffic, there is no general traffic and there are other places to park your car.

However, since Takezaki Lighthouse does not belong to the Space Center, entry to the lighthouse is restricted, but photography is free.

Here are some photos of Takezaki Lighthouse from my Instagram.

No showers nearby, but you can use the water supply at the space center

There are no showers at the point under the lighthouse, but the water supply next to the nearby warehouse is open for free use, so do not hesitate to use it.

We have confirmed this with the Tanegashima Space Center, so there is no doubt about it.

It is nice to have fresh water after surfing.

There are no toilets here, but there are toilets in the parking lot of the Space Science Museum nearby, so it is a good idea to use them.

Surprisingly, you can windsurf

When the wind is onshore (blowing from the sea to the land), it is almost impossible to surf at the surf point, so when the wind is onshore at the point under the lighthouse, surfers head for the west coast, where the wind is offshore.

However, this point under the lighthouse is also the place where windsurfers appear at such times.

Windsurfing is said to be more convenient when the wind is blowing from the sea to the land so that they can return to the shore in case of any trouble, and the wind direction seems to be completely opposite to that of surfing.

Unlike surfing, it is not possible to paddle, and it depends on the wind.

The point under the lighthouse is a flexible location for photographing Sammeraman

Under the lighthouse, there is a vast selection of shooting locations, so you have a great deal of freedom in shooting.

You can shoot from the beach, or you can aim at surfers in the distance in the shallows. You can also shoot from the top of the cliff (parking lot) where you can get a better angle.

The disadvantage of this point is that surfers spread out here and there on both sides, making it difficult to photograph. The surfers will ride as far as Serval Rock on the south side, so it is very difficult to take pictures.

I can't tell you how many times I have thought to myself, "I wish they would ride as far as they can with their cameras.

Points cleaned by surfers on Tanegashima Island

Among the surf points on Tanegashima, the area under the lighthouse seems to be particularly prone to litter.

The surf point under the lighthouse also has a large amount of garbage washed ashore, but it is cleaned up by the unrelenting efforts of the local surfers.

Some of the glass balls used for fishing can be sold, but it costs money to dispose of the trash that is picked up.

The local surfers pay for the disposal of the trash they pick up with their own money, and we are deeply grateful for their efforts.

It's also where the Tanegashima Space Center's engines are tested

While surfing under the lighthouse, you may encounter a rocket engine combustion test at the Tanegashima Space Center.

It is more than 5 km away from the lighthouse, so it does not interfere with surfing, but you may be lucky if you run into it.

Here are some rare photos of surfers during this rocket engine test.

The surfer is about the size of a sesame seed, and a combustion test of a new rocket engine, LE-9, is being conducted in the distance.

The smoke is all water vapor.

Anyway, it's a huge area, so there's no need to fight over the waves at all

Unlike the surf spots in the mainland, there are not many people here, so there is no fighting over the waves.

When you come to Tanegashima, you can play as much as you like.

On the other hand, the area is too wide for surf photography, but surfers will definitely have fun here.

It is also a good place to look for mysterious flotsam on the beach.

Sometimes you can see a school of dolphins moving several kilometers away from the point under the lighthouse

Only photographers with telephoto lenses may notice this, but you can see a school of dolphins moving several kilometers ahead of you.

I first noticed this when a local told me, "There is a pod of dolphins a few kilometers away! I was amazed at the local people who could see them with their naked eyes without using binoculars.

The locals on Tanegashima may have very good eyesight.

After that, I also try to look for dolphins. Once I started to see them, I could observe them moving in the southern direction for about 20 minutes.

East coast of Tanegashima, point under the lighthouse, best sunrise! Summary

This is the surf point under the lighthouse that goes down from the parking lot on the grounds of the Tanegashima Space Center, and I hope you got a sense of the size of the area.

On the way back from this point, you might want to stop by the Space Science Museum.

At this museum, you can take pictures as if you are floating in the air. The ice cream available at the Science Museum's store is great in the middle of summer, but it is not allowed to enter the museum in a bathing suit.

I would also like to thank all the surfers who have appeared on this blog.

Thank you for reading to the end.
